Living in Banff: your season inside a national park
Banff is a working town inside Canada's oldest national park, with three ski resorts, turquoise lakes and elk on the main street. It's also the only place in this guide where you can't simply rent a room: you need a reason to live here. Here's how a season really works.

A month on minimum wage

What newcomers need to know fast.
The need-to-reside rule
To live in Banff you must work in the park (or meet another eligible-resident rule). In practice that means staff housing through your employer, or renting in Canmore and commuting 25 km on the Roam bus.
Staff housing is the norm
The Bow Valley has more than 5,000 staff beds, over half of them in Banff. Most are shared rooms. If you leave the job, you usually leave the housing too, so choose your employer carefully.
Work
Hotels, the three ski resorts and restaurants all hire for winter and summer. The Job Resource Centre in Banff and Canmore is free and knows which employers include housing.
Healthcare
Mineral Springs Hospital in Banff and Canmore General Hospital both have emergency departments. Visitors pay non-resident rates, so call TuGo first.
Local knowledge
- The Job Resource Centre (304 Caribou St, Banff and 710 10th St, Canmore) helps with jobs, housing and paperwork.
- Roam Transit connects Banff, Canmore and Lake Louise. Most workers live without a car.
- Bow Valley Facebook groups are where rooms, rides and gear change hands. Watch for scams every season.
- You'll live with wildlife: give elk space, carry bear spray on trails and never feed animals.

Can I just rent a place in Banff?
Not usually. Banff has a need-to-reside rule, so you need to work in the park. Most seasonal workers live in staff housing or rent in Canmore.
Will Alberta's health plan cover me?
Some temporary workers with longer work permits can register for Alberta's health plan, but it doesn't cover everything, such as ground ambulance or getting you home. Keep private coverage for your whole stay, which IEC requires anyway.
Is the Kicking Horse rafting trip covered?
Yes. Commercial white-water rafting is covered unless the rapids are Class VI.
Does ice climbing need extra coverage?
Yes. Add Sports & Activities for ice climbing. In our real quote it added $225 to a 12-month policy.
