Living in Canmore: the Rockies town where people actually live
Canmore sits just outside Banff National Park, so anyone can rent here, and most Bow Valley workers do. It's a real mountain town with an Olympic Nordic centre, some of the best ice and rock climbing in Canada, and the Three Sisters watching over everything.

Settling in
What newcomers need to know fast.
Housing
Anyone can rent in Canmore, so competition is fierce. Rooms in shared houses go fast and scams are common in Facebook groups. Never pay before you've seen the place and met the landlord.
Living in a van
Canmore runs an overnight van-parking program for workers because housing is so tight. It fills up and has eligibility rules, so treat it as a backup, not a plan.
Work
Canmore has its own hotels, restaurants and outdoor businesses, and Banff is a 25-minute bus ride away. The Job Resource Centre is on 10th Street.
Healthcare
Canmore General Hospital has a 24/7 emergency department. Visitors pay non-resident rates, so call TuGo before you're treated if you can.
Local knowledge
- Canmore Nordic Centre, built for the 1988 Olympics, has free trails for running, biking and Nordic skiing.
- Kananaskis Country is the locals' backyard. You'll need a Kananaskis Conservation Pass to park there.
- The climbing community is tight and welcoming. Local gyms are the easiest place to find partners.
- Roam Transit runs to Banff and Lake Louise, so you don't need a car.

Canmore FAQ.
Is Canmore cheaper than Banff?
Not really, but anyone can rent here. Banff's staff housing is often cheaper if your employer offers it.

Yes, for rock climbing, ice climbing and mountaineering. Rock climbing added $135 and ice climbing $225 in our real 12-month quote, and you only pay for the highest one.
Is Nordic skiing covered?
